Every coat of paint softens a texture profile slightly. Matching to a sample board produces a patch that looks newer than the wall around it. The match is made against what is on the wall today.
The four textures around here
Knockdown is sprayed, allowed to set, then flattened, and the timing of the knock sets the profile. Orange peel is sprayed and left. Skip trowel and hand textures mean matching a person's motion rather than a machine setting. Smooth is the least forgiving of all, because there is nothing to hide the transition.
Ceilings are the hard ones
Ceilings show every flaw because light crosses them at a low angle all day. A wall patch forgives more than most people think; a ceiling patch forgives nothing, which is why ceiling work is quoted with more care and takes longer.
Where a ceiling has been repaired several times over the years by several different people, the honest answer is sometimes to re-texture the whole plane rather than chase a match across four generations of compound.
